30 days og Torchwood - Day 30

Day 30: Why You Love Torchwood Ok - know I've been a little bit behind on this. All because I'm on holiday at the moment. Went to Cardiff yesterday, and it was wonderful. Reminded me so much of why I love Torchwood! Torchwood is a rehash of a very used concept. It's been done plenty of times in various ways. However Torchwood definitely has something unique about it, and feels like something new all the same. It's weird and funny and quirky. The characters don't always act how you expect them to act, and sometimes they do silly or stupid things as well. It's unpredictable and surprising much of the time. I love the hub and the creatures who live there. I really liked the idea of Captain Jack having his own series and I really like how the two first seasons turned out. They go through so many weird cases and fascinating aspects of life! I love the team, and I most definitely love the characters. There is also the mix between domestic and sci-fi that I li...

30 Days of Torchwood - Day 29

Day 29: Something you liked that most people didn't That will have to be 'Cyberwoman'. I know it's universally frowned upon by Who-fans who think the Torchwood version of the Cybermen just don't fit into the rest of the whoniverse , and on that level I do agree. It is also an episode I didn't like much on my first viewing, because of the sheer tackiness of the cyberman-costume used. The look of the episode is like something from a comic or a graphic novel. It looks horrible. I can't for the life of me understand why someone thought putting a woman in a steel-bikini would be a good idea. Seems to me like the costume-designer was trying to fulfill some boyish fantasy-ideal. Yuck! The story is deeply moving, however. Lisa's fate is just horrible, and watching Ianto's struggles culminating in the events of the episode is quite heartbreaking. I also like the portrayal of Jack in this episode. I like how he tries to reason with Ianto, and how he se...

Unsuccessfully upping the odds in Torchwood

Why I’m not enthusiastic about Miracle Day and probably won’t watch. I know no one likes having their show dumped on, and I have noticed myself doing a bit of that in my Torchwood-meme. I think it's fair to talk about why I don't really feel tempted to watch Torchwood anymore - and it does not all have to do with Ianto. (Even if I might have kept watching for the sheer brilliance of the character if they hadn’t killed him off..) I loved Captain Jack when he was introduced in Doctor Who. Living in Norway I came a bit late to the series of Doctor Who, and by the time I watched it (2009), I could just go to imdb to check if Jack would be back. Seeing he would return made me look forward to his next episodes in season 3.  It is safe to say I considered him a great character - quite unlike anything I had ever seen before. I loved his charm and his humor and his flirtatious behavior and that core of bravery within him. I tuned into Torchwood entirely for him after h...

30 Days of Torchwood - Day 28

Day 28 - Your favourite alien tech So many good ones to choose from! Like Tosh I think I would like the reading-device that allows her to read at an immense speed. There are more useful devices, though. The contact-lenses are great, but a bit overused, maybe. Every now and then I would have liked a ghost-machine as well.  Still, the Risen Mitten - part 2 has to be my favourite. It did after all allow us to enjoy Owen's presence for a few more episodes. Come to think of it, Jack could really use some nanogenes (from 'The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances' in Torchwood. Resurrecting Tosh, Owen and Ianto might do wonders for the state of the series...

30 Days of Torchwood - day 27

Day 27 - Least Favourite Episode   This question is a bit difficult to answer when I haven't seen Miracle Day. It will just have to be my least favourite out of the ones I've seen.  Torchwood is quite uneven as a series, and some of the episodes are hardly watchable. "Random Shoes" is an example of an episode I find really boring seeing as it is very team-light and Eugene Jones isn't all that interesting. "Small worlds" is another one I didn't like. You might have gathered that I'm not Jack's biggest fan. There is definite foreshadowing to Children of Earth Day Five in this. Then there is the poor mother who loses everything - just too sad! It's also more fantasy than sci-fi with this one. The real contestants here, however are "Day Four" and "Day Five" of Children of Earth. Yes - they are both incredibly good episodes when it comes to the writing, and in many ways some of the best pieces of television I hav...

30 Days of Torchwood - Day 26

Day 26 - Where you think the series should continue to For me, this series ended with Children of Earth. Owen, Toshiko and Ianto were the most interesting characters.  I don’t really care what happens to Gwen. It would be nice if she and Rhys live happily ever after, though. Jack should just go sit in a dark, dank cave and brood until he turns into the Face of Boe. There are some questions I’d like answered. They never will be – but even so: a  - What happened during the year that never was? Apart from the trip to the Himalayas, that is.. (That could be quite at neat series all on its own..) b  - What would Tosh do after her five years were up? c  - Why did Ianto lie about his background, and how did he get involved with Torchwood (1) in the first place? d  - What happens to the people on Flat Holm, the ruined hub, the dead/frozen people, Myfanwy or Janet now? I I might of course watch Miracle Day at some point, but the reviews haven't r...

30 Days of Torchwood - day 25

Day 25 - Who you’d shag, cliff and marry Easy one – Shag Ianto, cliff Jack and marry Rhys. There are moments I’d consider cliffing Gwen, but I generally like her more than I dislike her. Then I considered cliffing Owen – whom I don’t really dislike either, but he can be incredibly unpleasant and I’ve never really forgiven him for using the date-rape perfume. But out of everyone I’ll just have to cliff Jack. It’d have to be a really high far-away cliff, though – if I were to get rid of him for enough time so I could shag Ianto ;-) I might have considered marrying Tosh if she were a man. Since she isn’t there’s no real competition! Rhys seems to be the perfect guy – I’d marry him in a heartbeat!

30 days of Torchwood - day 24

Day 24 - Best Torchwood on Doctor Who moment They aren’t really in it, but I love the mention they get in “Turn Left”. I know some people are quite sceptical about it, but I like RTD's tendency to give shout-outs to his spin-offs and other characters on Who. Also I miss it now that he is gone from the show. I also just love the arrogance of Torchwood 1 in “Army of Ghosts/Doomsday”. It’s a great preface to the series, and even though this was partially dealt with in “Cyberwoman”, I would have liked to see even more of Torchwood Three dealing with the events. Owen clearly knew a great deal about it, and we do see Jack being aware Rose was declared dead after the event.
