30 Days of Torchwood - day 17

Day 17 - Your favourite Gwen moment

Gwen shooting the nostrovite at her wedding in "Something Borrowed".

This is when I actually started to like the character of Gwen!

Up until then she had been incredibly self-absorbed and attention-hungry. We were told she such a unique attitude and humanity about her. We never got to see that, however. To me she seemed like the "damsel-in-distress"/clumsy character  throughout season 1 (referring to Day One, Ghost Machine, Cyberwoman, Countrycide, They Keep Killing Suzie, Random Shoes, End of Days) and I could not for the life of me understand why she was accepted onto the team as she had little or nothing to contribute. She seemed like a bit of a Mary Sue without the penchant for figuring out the answer.

This tendency does take a turn during season 2, however, and by the time she chooses to get married despite being heavily pregnant and hunted by a nostrovite, it became clear (at least to me) that she was becoming the character we had always been told she was.

Female characters in fiction tend to be put on the sideline or withdraw from their former life once they marry and have children. This has not happened to Gwen at all. In fact - she is moving in the opposite direction. That makes her very unique as a fictional character. Your typical sci-fi heroine is in her early twenties, has some supernatural ability, is extremely intelligent and is often the main love-interest of the hero. Gwen is or has none of these things, but can still be the show's leading female character.

In fact, that might be what actually makes her such a good heroine. She is a normal woman who just happened to stumble across something incredible. We see her finding fault, we see her struggling with what she experiences and she experiences very believable issues in balancing her work-life with her personal-life. In that way she is easy to identify with. The nice thing about her, is that we also see a lot of character development. She start out making lots of errors (hence my dislike of her in season 1) and has definitely moved towards someone professional and competent. the nice thing is that we can still see she is the same character at heart.

Since the moment I mention in Something Borrowed was where I started to catch on to that development, this is my favourite Gwen-moment. Couldn't find a picture of the exact scene, but I found a nice promi-pic instead.
